As a teacher with over 15 years’ experience, I am well aware of the current and sometimes overwhelming issues surrounding young people. Two years ago I left the classroom to pursue a new career helping individual pupils through tutoring. It soon became clear that young people’s needs are complex and varied. I can see there is a real demand for helping young people steer through the stresses and pressures of school life. I have therefore retrained and become a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist, this has enabled me to apply the key principles of CBT to all my sessions with my pupils.

What is cbt and how does it work?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a form of talk and action psychotherapy which involves talking through people’s thoughts and behaviours; then seeing how they affect and control feelings.

What can CBT be used for?

Initially CBT proved to be most effective when treating conditions involving anxiety and depression. However, as time has gone on and clinical research and trials have been developed, there are now a number of other disorders that may improve with CBT. These include:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Eating disorders
  • Phobias and fears
  • Agoraphobia
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Body dysmorphia

Within a school or college environment, these conditions may arise from:

  • Bullying or being picked on (physical abuse)
  • Peer pressure and fitting in (mental abuse)
  • Exam and work pressure
  • Coping with special needs within the academic environment
  • Reluctance to go to school
How does it work?

It has been proven that the way we think about a situation has a direct effect on our feelings towards that situation or person and also how we will then react to said situation – the actions we will take.

What to expect?

CBT tends to be a shorter course of treatment than other prescribed treatments. It is not always for everyone as sometimes the matters to be discussed could be challenging or upsetting.

Our experience

I have chosen to specialise in CBT for adolescents and young people as I believe that after the recent pandemic, there is a real need to give them the tools and strategies to cope with everyday life and also provide the support and empathy to enable them to realise they are not alone and there is someone who will work along side them to help with any issues.

With my background in education I believe I have the perfect mix of counselling and education skills. I also believe it is important to extend my knowledge through further professional development courses specialising in adolescent counselling. I am currently helping students with special needs such as autism, ADHD, as well as dyslexia issues. Other current issues relate to exam and work pressure, family relationships and coping with the real world.

Focus/Discussion

Think of areas that you would wish to discuss or be a focus, or are concerning and may require counselling. CBT is an empathic form of counselling that involves a strong bond of trust between counsellor and client.

treatment plan

Initial discussions will result in a treatment plan. This will be shared and will be a staged program to tackle and discuss the issues that are being raised. The pace of the plan will be measured and cater to the needs of the individual.

Progress & Tracking

In between sessions there may be tasks or exercises to complete. These may be written or involve other strategies such as specific techniques. The more these are practised the more effective the progress will be.

Fees

Please note that all sessions need to be booked in advance in batches of 3 or 6. Payment to be made by cheque, cash or BACS.

Longer sessions or daily rates to be quoted individually according to need.
